In this symbolic sense, the hook (vav) can represent man in his fallen state, bound to the material customs of the world. The letter vav, meaning “hook,” also carries numerical value six, and when tripled (666), it signifies the fullness of human imperfection and the dominion of worldly systems apart from God. Thus, while the divine vav was meant to connect heaven and earth, in corruption it becomes a symbol of man ensnared by the world rather than joined to the Creator.
